The Post Office in Freshwater will close for around 4 weeks when the West Wight’s largest supermarket transforms from the Co-Operative to Tesco.
It has been confirmed that the vital service will close short-term to allow for a re-fit of the store.
As previously reported by Island Echo, Tesco will takeover the Co-Operative’s flagship store this Autumn.
The nearest alternative Post Office branches are located in Totland and Yarmouth – a considerable distance away. Yarmouth is opened 09:00-12 midday Monday to Friday, whilst Totland is open from 08:30-13:00 weekdays and 09:00-11:00 on Saturdays.
A spokesperson for Tesco Stores has said:
“We apologise to customers for any inconvenience this may cause and we look forward to welcoming everyone to the new store once it’s ready.”
Tesco already operates stores in Ryde, Wootton, Lake and Ventnor. It’s unknown exactly when the Freshwater store will open its doors for customers.
Still no post office in Newport Town centre
Surely the only candidate for city status without a post office. Only on the Isle of Wight.
Applying for city status for Newport is an embarrassment. The Isle of Wight is considered a bit of a joke elsewhere, as evidenced by how many times I’ve heard it mentioned in the media as something to laugh at.
Soon there’ll be more Tesco’s than Post Offices!!! :-((((
I hope Tesco’s are going to support the local suppliers in the same way that the Co-op have done. Otherwise, “I’m out”!
I would rather travel to Newport (or even Cowes) as there’s probably no benefit now for going to Freshwater specially to get local produce.
