FREE PARKING UNDER THREAT AS COUNCIL PROPOSES NEW CHARGES ISLANDWIDE
Share on FacebookShare on X

The introduction of a further 7 paid-parking locations across the Isle of Wight have been set out by the Council in its latest budget proposal, with busy commercial hotspots in Ryde, Sandown and Shanklin looking likely to take the hit.

The proposal, made ‘in the face of exceptional financial pressures’, could see the implementation of on-street charges on St James Street in Newport, Egypt Esplanade in Cowes and Princes Esplanade at Gurnard, as well as Fort Victoria near Yarmouth, which will all become pay and display zones.

In other parts of the Island, charges are being sought for 82 bays lining Ryde’s Union Street; 21 bays in Crocker Street, Newport; 43 bays throughout Sandown High Street and 27 bays on Shanklin’s Regent Street.

Towards the end of 2025, every Council-owned long-stay car park was free to use between midday and 18:00 in an attempt to back local businesses around the festive period.

Just over 2 months on, the Isle of Wight Council is seemingly looking to penalise businesses by impacting their footfall potential.

If charges are to go ahead local leaders can expect to see a £162,000 increase in their 2026/27 penny pot.

The decision is due to be discussed by the committee on 20th February and will go to Full Council at a later date.

You might just as well shut down the remaining shops then.

The council own and operate Fort Victoria and do very little to maintain the infrastructure and visitor numbers.

If they make it pay for parking, that will be the end of Fort Victoria, perhaps that is what they want..

The aim of closing down independent businesses and forcing everyone to only use the conglomerates is under way. Soon nobody will afford their own homes, nobody will own a business. All the assets will be totally in the hands of the global world order. It might sound stupid but it’s happening.

It is part of the UNELECTED World Economic Forums plans.

You will own nothing and be happy.

The plan is to control people by bringing in a
Universal basic income.

Digital ID’s will be mandated and people will
have their carbon limits.

It is sadly happening and people cannot stop it.

The so called Elites want total control

For once I must agree with enough is enough and others saying about the WEF and the global elite. You can smell the change in the air. Freedom, free speech is being erode quicker than ever before. The quote own nothing and be happy, is documented as from them and the reduction of population. A Bill Gates speech on YouTube, shows it plainly on his bullet points, check out his GM mosquitoes, not for eradicating malaria, as he implies, far darker purpose. Research Bohimia Grove USA. Why are new strains of virus making a comeback? It goes on.
We all have to wake up and be aware. To me the main clue is putting that evil demon spawn Tony sodding Blair in charge and his cohort of halfwits

Wow! You’ve really lost your mind over this haven’t you? What is wrong with you? There is no conspiracy theory. Were not Americans.
You’ve obviously never lived anywhere abroad.
May I suggest you get something more interesting in your life than moaning online and proving yourself incapable of taking in information whilst making yourself appear deranged.

How about sacking some useless, overpaid Council member’s? This will affect our few shops that are left. Create even more stress for us: looking for change or struggling with crap parking apps; keep us constantly clock watching and generally make our already miserable Island lives even more miserable!! Thanks IOW Council. So pleased u have our best interests at heart.

I realise that the Council’s coffers are in a parlous state.
However, creating new pay and display parking in the areas described is tantamount to further increasing the erosion of the island’s economy, already stretched beyond belief. If they do this, it’s a death knell for many more island businesses.

Our high streets are dying and this would be the final nail in the coffin for many independent shops. Once we lose those shops they will never re open and our towns will be ghost towns! I often use these streets to ‘pop’ to use specific shops…Farmhouse Fayre for example, I will park in the street outside to get my fruit and veg on the way to do my ‘big shop’. People will not do this if they can’t just pull in on that road. There is no forethought in this situation, the council can’t see any further than the end of their noses!

Goodbye to Sandown High Street shops, Regent’s Street shops Shanklin, Fort Victoria and the rest if this goes ahead. What the Council reaps from parking will eventually be lost from Commercial rates. No real coordinated approach or thinking by Councillors and official planners!

Totally against the seafront charges Cowes and Gurnard, myself and others park there to enable a pleasant ‘level’ hour or so walk for those of us that struggle with hills.

I agree but they don’t want people driving hence
charging people so much so they will stop driving.

I refuse to pay for any parking to do with the council it’s a racket that should be banned
We pay enough for tax and insurance plus the extortionate council tax
All a rip off

Where does one start, don’t get me started about
parking on the Isle of Wight!

I have interupreted my holiday to get involved
in this ballsh*t

“The island has a 2 tier parking policy”

Every day vehicles are parked on
DOUBLE YELLOW LINES along Oakhill Road in Seaview.

FCUK ALL GETS DONE ABOUT IT!

Every day vehicles are evading parking fees by
parking on the PAVEMENT opposite Sandown pier
outside the old tourist information centre.

FCUK ALL GETS DONE ABOUT IT!

Everyday vehicles are parked on the opposite
side of the Street in Regent Street Shanklin

FCUK ALL GETS DONE ABOUT IT!

G4S drivers parks on Zig Zags outside
Nationwide building society Cross Street, Ryde

FCUK ALL GETS DONE ABOUT IT!

Some Numpty business owners in Union Street Ryde
leave their vehicles parked along Union street in Ryde
“ALL DAY”
What happened to the so called 1 Hour limit!!

HENCE 2 TIER PARKING

Too be honest Islanders have had it good for many years.

Many places on the island have parking charges along
High Streets and main Streets etc.

Majority of places charge motorists permit charges to
park down streets and roads where they live

MAJORITY OF PLACED ON THE ISLAND DONE CHARGE
PERMIT CHARGES, HENCE SO MANY HOUSEHOLDS
CLOGGING UP ROADS AND STREETS SO OTHER
HOUSEHOLDS CANNOT PARK.

START CHARGING PERMIT CHARGES PER VEHICLE
THAT WILL REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF METAL ON
THE ISLAND!!

I am surprised the council are not introducing a
clean air zone on the island like many mainland
councils.

Many councils charge more to park Diesel vehicles
on the mainland, some charge clean air charges
etc etc .

At the moment things are still good for
Island motorists, try driving to the big smoke
in a diesel van for the day.

DAILY ULEZ CHARGE IS £12.50
DAILY CONGESTION CHARGE IS £18.00

TYPICAL 1 HOUR PARKING CHARGE IS £7.00

So parking for 10 hours is £70.00

So a day charge is £100.50

HENCE MY SON SELLING HIS VEHICLE IN
THE BIG SMOKE AND TRAVELLING BY BUS.

Stop moaning, it could be much worse.

IW Council are generous with their cheap parking
Fees.

Domestically, local authority funding is one of the biggest issues we face at present, and this is a great idea on how to finally kill off our local shops and our towns, as the final nail in the coffin is about to be hammered down. They band things about to test reaction, but I believe they really will implement this, unless a public outcry from shopkeepers happens. Our council tax is already one of the highest in the UK at number 319 from 347 local authorities, it will increase by 4.99% in April, they cut services to the bone, and they still want more, especially from an easy target like the motorist.
Let me make a suggestion. The council needs urgent restructuring and a cut to the wage bill as its carrying far too many passengers on high salaries and gold plated pension schemes. Get rid of some dead wood as residents are already stretched to the limit and most are unable to afford paying more for even less ‘free’ services. It cannot carry on like this every year without central government intervention and smoke out the inefficiencies here on our island. I understand the pressures they are under, like social care as an example, but senior management must take responsibility by the horns and cut the wage bill to lesson the burden on residents.

Council tax is a joke.

The persons on benefits don’t pay hardly any Council tax
if any.

We are funding what they don’t pay, yet they find money
for cigarettes, vapes, booze and tattoos.

They should all pay a percentage

Reform won’t change a thing, anyone voting Reform
is voting Tory.
It is full of Tory rejects.

Let’s not forget who actually created the Reform party

Another WEF controlled party that gives voters hope,
they will promise so much and deliver nothing!.

Nothing will change.

I will stick to voting to the Original Tory party not the
newly formed reject Tory party
Lol

Why is the island council trying to close most businesses on our High Streets by bringing in parking fees! Surely we have enough closed, tatty buildings already. No independent shops etc will mean even less holiday makers than last year! Are we not a Tourist lead business island?

And also to local shops will benefit to

They can’t use parking charges to generate revenue. They’re only lawful as a space management measure. This has been explained in simple words on several occasions.

I just read on GB News that Bournemouth, Christchurch and
Poole are looking to make higher parking penalties for
Numpty motorists who break the rules.
They are cracking down on illegal parking.

Fines of £160.00

They also have a compound something the island
desperately needs to stop numpties parking selfishly
