A flood alert has been issued for the Isle of Wight coast, with the Environment Agency warning that flooding is possible around high tide tomorrow (Wednesday).
Strong south-easterly winds, reaching Force 6, may cause waves to overtop sea defences and result in spray and minor flooding around areas such as Yarmouth, Freshwater Bay, Sandown, Shanklin, Gurnard and Ryde. This will flood esplanades, sea front car parks and roads in these locations.
Flooding is expected to be possible for up to 1 hour either side of the high tide at 12:34 tomorrow lunchtime.
At Cowes, the total forecast tide is 4.72 metres Chart Datum – 2.13 metres above ordnance datum. But as Cowes is sheltered from waves, impacts, if any, will be minimal.
Property flooding is not expected at this time.
The Environment Agency is urging people to take care near coastal areas and avoid walking or driving through flood water. Residents are encouraged to activate any local flood protection they may have.
