The Cowes Floating Bridge service across the River Medina has been suspended this morning (Tuesday) due to a cable that needs replacing.
The Isle of Wight Council says that ‘usual operational wear and tear’ means that a cable needs to be urgently replaced, resulting in a suspension of service until engineers can fix the problem.
Contractors are expected to arrive on site at 09:00 this morning, but there has been no indication how long the service will remain out of action for.
A launch service between East Cowes and Cowes is in operation for foot passengers and cyclists at this time.
UPDATE – The service has now resumed.

I thought they had replaced the chains a few weeks ago, this thing is a sick joke and the council should grow a pair and just take it out of service and stop wasting OUR money on a thing that is not and never will be fit for purpose.
‘usual operational wear and tear’ is supposed to be foreseen in maintenance schedules. So who is in charge of maintenance? Name and shame.
How’s that possible..it hardly stays in operation..i was on it other day thought the chain was going to smash it’s way through the bloody car deck….what a piece of crap it is..
You are having a laugh. New floating bridge is an ongoing joke. Wretched thing can’t have been in action for much more than 720 days of its current life. Next they’ll be asking for a new engine, then a body and probably a deeper River Medina!!!
Wear and Tear – Lol
I thought they were still running this in.
Cheaper to tow it into the middle of the solent and
get the Royal Navy to Torpedo it, the Navy lads could
do with the training and us tax payers could do with
saving money on this heap of junk!.
The Council never did and will still not divulge the outcome of taking the builders of this contraption to court. They were supposed to claw back thousands of council tax money. OUR MONEY!!!! I think an audit on this matter should be done and made available for public scruntiny.
Well, they would go and buy a Lidl Middle Aisle floating bridge, of course it’s gonna wear out quickly. If you looked real close, you’d probably find ‘Parkside’ embossed on it somewhere.
