From submerged roads to overflowing drains, these photos show the widespread impact of flooding last night’s (Sunday) flash flooding across the Isle of Wight.
Island Roads crews have been working through the night to manage the impact of widespread surface water flooding. The following roads remain closed as of this morning:

In addition to the closures, flood warning signage has been deployed at numerous locations where conditions remain hazardous. These areas include:

Island Roads has said that most of the emergency activity took place before midnight, but teams remain active this morning assessing each affected site. Roads will be reopened as soon as it is safe to do so.
A spokesperson for Island Roads has said:
“These have been really challenging conditions and our staff – both behind the scenes in the hub and out on location – have been working hard to keep the network as safe and accessible as possible.
“However, further flooding is possible in the coming days so we would ask motorists to take additional care wherever they are on the network while these severe conditions remain.”

Due to the severity of the flooding, sandbags are being delivered to Whitwell (bottom of Nettlecombe Lane) and Niton (Allotment Road) for residents’ use.
Whilst we have to recognose that there was exceptional rainfall and that in some areas there may have been an very high tide as it was a full Snow moon last night, it is also the case that many drains did not cope. The question has to be asked, were the drains overwhelmed by lack of adequate clearance and cleaning? Were some of these floods accidents waiting to happen?
Totally agree,the drain outside my house regularly blocks up,i go out and unblock it,been in my house 5 years and the drains have never beeb cleaned or the road swept.
And yet our dopey council still want to build more and more houses!
Stop keep concreting over fields building free homes for the chavs, clean the crap out of the drains and dredge the rivers and streams and the rain will have somewhere to go. Pure straight forward bloody logics that the useless pricks in charge can’t or can’t be asked to work out would ease the problem
