A primary school on the Isle of Wight has announced that it will be closed for children in Years R, 1, 2, 3 and 4 from tomorrow (Monday) in the interests of the safety of children, staff and the wider community.
St Thomas Of Canterbury Catholic Primary School in Newport has announced that the decision has been taken to partially close the school to all students apart from those in Years 5 and 6 and key worker/vulnerable children. Those in other years will learn online instead.
The Governing Body and senior leadership team have reviewed the school risk assessment and have reached the decision as quickly as possible, but say that the decision has not been taken lightly.
Headteacher Mrs Sanderson has apologised for the last minute nature of the decision, which will undoubtedly leave some parents with childcare issues and only a few hours notice to make alternative arrangements. She says that the safety of children, staff and the wider community is paramount.
Parents of key worker or vulnerable children are being asked to email [email protected] to confirm if a space is required.
All children are said to have learning at home ready to be used from tomorrow and further learning will be posted physically and online.
UPDATE @ 17:45 – It has now been confirmed that other schools are taking similar action.
- Arreton Primary School – closed to Years R, 1, 4 and 5

All schools should be shut at least till feb half term, primary school kids at risk more with parents crowding the pavements playgrounds ect
Yes if schools are closed parents need to keep their kids home. I’m fed up of seeing all ages of school kids going around in large groups everywhere. They may as well be in school if parents give them free rein to go out wherever they want and with all their friends.
Well done to Mrs Sanderson for making what must have been a difficult decision. My son is at St Thomas’ and Mrs S spent the whole of Sunday messaging us and keeping us up to date with the situation. Primary schools have been let down by this government and should be closed. I feel sorry for the teachers who are risking their families safety.
It’s either safe for all years or none at all. What gives schools the ability to decide which years can go to school and which years cannot. Would like to hear their so called logic behind it
The numbers of teachers. The cases on the island include teachers diagnosed with covid.
This is so true Noodles, Primary school parents and grandparents treat the drop off and pick up times as a social event.Large groups of them with no masks and no social distancing.
No one wears masks outside you clown.
the only clowns are the ones not wearing masks!
The masks make you believe in the presence of an invisible alleged killer virus. The nonsense RT-PCR (mass) tests are the irrational for all other totally insane measures. Honestly, do you want to be ‘swabbed’ aka fooled by pitifully embarrassing psychopaths again and again?
Make the most of your free speech, the echo is joining youtube, google,Facebook and all the other platforms that is hell bent on stopping any questioning of the narrative! Mine and your posts take down. Wont be long free thought, gone!
There is free speech and there is downright dangerous speech. I’d support IE fully in removing any of this conspiracy theory nonsense.
Despite what David Icke or some other idiot who has “researched” their theories will tell you…..there is a pandemic, it is killing our loved ones, it is being made worse by lunatics who will not follow the very simple rules in place.
Rant and rave all you like but please, don’t moan when civilised society censors you. It’s about time in fact that prison sentences were dished out for the deluded few who we hear from time and time again.
Get it through your thick, drug addled skulls that the only sheeple around here are your kind.
The only conspiracy is the hoax perpetrated over its people by its Government.
You know, that’s such an untrue statement. There are thousands of genuine conspiracies. Covid isn’t one of them. You are a victim of this bullsh**
Usually fruit loops are left to their own devices but when it spills into reality as with the 5G mast attacks and Covid misinformation, you must understand that you become a danger to the rest of us.
Believe what you want to believe but stop trying to convince the rest of us that our beliefs are flawed. We’d rather live and play it safe.
Stay lucky.
Seems obvious the government again has no clue.. All one has to do is look at the FACTS, after the first lockdown, when kids went back to school, Covid spiked.. It does not take a statician to crunch numbers into a computer !!
And if anyone looks out their window when school children are on way or from school, will notice groups of many, no masks.. no distancing.. In school playgrounds probably the same..
I agree the schools , all of them, and all other places that have crowds of people should be shut. Until this Covid gets under control.. PLUS the government need to monitor people that are out and about.. it does say STAY AT HOME.
Something wrong with the comment section. Says there are more comments than it is showing. Did they forget to add paging?
