FIRE CREWS RESPOND TO BUILDING BLAZE

UPDATED: Two fire crews from the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service are this afternoon attending a reported building fire in Sandown.

Appliances from Ryde and Sandown have been dispatched to a mental health accommodation unit, Sandham House in Fort Street, near to the seafront, following reports of a fire within the property.

20130715-160705.jpgFirefighters using breathing apparatus have entered the block of flats and have contained the blaze to one bedroom using a single hose reel.

Island Echo understands fire crews attended the same property only a few nights ago and last year attended a microwave fire at the address.

No one has been injured in the incident and all residents have evacuated the building.

Fort Street has been closed by Police with local diversions via Crescent Road. Fire crews remain on the scene, however the incident is coming to a close.

UPDATE @ 16:30 – Fort Street has now reopened to traffic and fire crews have left the scene.

Police presence was heavy in the area.
