Partying too hard on New Year’s Eve landed an 18-year-old in court charged with being drunk and disorderly.
Dougal Gwilliam, of Meadowside in Newport, appeared before the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court on 17th January where he pleaded guilty to a single charge of being drunk and disorderly in St Thomas’ Square during the early hours of 1st January.
The court heard from prosecutor Lauren McConnell that Police officers on patrol in Newport Town Centre came across Gwilliam outside Kenny’s, the popular fast food takeaway, at around 01:15 on New Year’s Day.
The 18-year-old claimed to officers that he had been assaulted, but his story kept changing. He then became a nuisance to others and was bumping into groups queuing for their food.
Police offered Gwilliam a lift home but he refused, deciding to walk away instead. As he did so, he shouted: “f**k off I’m a psycho” and “leave me alone or I’ll spit at you”. With this, he was arrested for being drunk and disorderly in a public place.
Magistrates heard that the 18-year-old had no previous convictions but 3 cautions for arson, assault, shoplifting and public order offences.
Defending, Oscar Vincent said that his client had little recollection of the incident and despite Police disbelieving him, Gwilliam was assaulted and had his glasses broken in the process.
The self-employed landscaper was fined £50 and ordered to pay £85 costs with a £20 surcharge.
