A faulty train has forced a reduced service on Island Line between Ryde and Shanklin, with South Western Railway saying the disruption is to persist until Tuesday. Despite Island Line receiving multiple new trains as part of the recent major investment in the railway, it’s said that fewer trains are able to run due to the single faulty unit. Passengers are warned that disruption is expected to continue until at least the end of the day on Monday, meaning a normal timetable service isn’t expected to resume until Tuesday morning. Rail tickets are being accepted, at no extra cost, on Southern Vectis Route 2 and 3 services between Ryde Esplanade and Shanklin. South Western Railway says it is ‘very sorry’ for any delay that this may cause to your journey.

Does it still count as “multiple” if they clearly only provided exactly the number needed to run a basic service with no contingency at all for failures?
As for “new” – back in 1983, perhaps…
They have 5 trains to run a 2 train service, more than enough in normal conditions – presumably a combination of factors, perhaps including the recent flooding, have come together.

Are they also providing transport up and down the pier?

We seem to be experts at buying duff equipment.
They have five units, which means there are three spare and supposed to be capable of being brought into service as soon as the line is clear of the failed unit. Since they failed to retain any locomotives to clear the line, one of the spares should be able to shift the failed unit, if it fails out on the line. In any event, there is no good excuse for not bringing one of the spares into service, but these privateer cowboy outfits don’t believe in running a service, when to do so, threatens their greedy shareholders ‘ dividends
Island Line is run via the Treasury and the DFT. It is fully nationalised. End of. Read my articles on the Island Line upgrade shambles in Railnews. The Pier will be closing again for 11 weeks despite what our amazing MP says that the project is complete. It ain’t.
Island Line is run by SWR and they provide the stock. SWR are a private company – end of.
The track and most infrastructure is owned and maintained by Network Rail, which is a nationalised company
Why will ONE faulty train prevent a normal service when they have FIVE UNITS in total
Even a child could work out that they have THREE replacements
Not sure – only guessing…. but I understand there were teething problems with these trains when first delivered, because they were – and are – the only Vivarail refurbished LT units to be converted for 3-rail electric and the 600vDC (sparking?) was messing with the electronics. If so, one out – all out, possibly?
Anyone on the workforce prepared to reveal all ?
Strange that since this became a talking point the train service is back to normal even though they said it would go on until the 16th I reckon they were just cutting costs as its a quiet time of year
