UPDATED: Police and paramedics are attending a road traffic incident in Wellow tonight (Thursday) which has resulted in the hard road closure of a country road.
Emergency services were called to the scene on the B3401 Wellow Road between Thorley and Ningwood at around 22:00 with at least 4 Police units and ambulance crews responding to the 999 call.
It has been confirmed that a hard road closure is being put in place by Island Roads at the request of Police, indicating the seriousness of the injuries sustained.
Southern Vectis Route 7 services are diverting via Shalfleet and Elm Lane until further notice and are not serving Newbridge.
It is currently unclear as to how many people have been injured in the incident, however it is believed to involve a single vehicle.
UPDATE @ 02:55 – Island Echo understands a pedestrian has been seriously injured after being involved in a collision with a BMW X5 4×4.
Forensic collision investigators from the mainland are at the scene this morning (Friday) and are conducting an examination of the unlit road between Station Road and Coopers Lane.
The vehicle involved in the incident, a dark coloured BMW X5, has been recovered from the scene by Stag Lane Motors.
The road remains closed in both directions as investigations continue.
The casualty has been conveyed to St Mary’s Hospital, Newport.
UPDATE @ 03:24 – Wellow Road has reopened in both directions some 5 hours after the collision occurred.
UPDATE @ 09:05 – It has been confirmed that a 29-year-old is being treated in hospital for serious head injuries following last night’s collision.
Police arrested the driver of the BMW X5 for failing a roadside breath test. He has been bailed until 30th October pending further enquiries.
Police are now appealing for witnesses to come forward.
