A driver who injured his 3 passengers after rolling his Jaguar near Wootton, in an incident which could have led to a fatality, has been handed a suspended prison sentence and banned from driving for 36 months. Perry Powell, 29, from Wootton, was travelling at speeds of around 90mph on a space saver wheel when he crashed his Jaguar XF on Whiterails Road on 24th March this year. As Powell travelled towards Newport, having just overtaken another car at speed, he lost control and clipped a tree before ploughing into a fence, the impact ripping 2 wheels clean off the vehicle. The crash resulted in the car coming to a stop on its roof, seriously injuring Powell’s partner and causing injury to 2 teenagers. Police conducted a roadside drugs wipe which returned a positive reading for cannabis. Subsequent laboratory tests led to Powell being charged and appearing at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court, where he admitted a single charge of drug driving. The court heard how the front female passenger sustained a fractured spine in the smash and required plastic surgery to her face. A teenage girl in the back of the car suffered a bad cut to her knee which required surgery. A teenage boy, also in the back of the British motor, suffered bruising. Appearing for sentencing on Friday afternoon, Powell was handed a 12-week prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, and ordered to complete 150 hours of unpaid work alongside 25 rehabilitation days. He was also banned from the roads for 36 months and ordered to pay £85 costs with a £154 surcharge.

Not got a driving ban?.
what a joke, so what about a driving ban
Meanwhile his now probably ex girlfriend is in constant pain for the rest of her life. Well done you absolute loser.
Such a crime should be instant imprisonment not a suspended sentence.
Drug driving and speeding
Trouble is, the jails are already over-full. Jailing people isn’t the answer – stopping crime is the answer. Luckily our superbly competent and highly-organised government has that in hand: they’ve nearly recovered most of the policemen they’ve lost since taking office, and we must have some really busy Home Secretaries as we seem to be wearing them out so quickly.
He should be jailed. The courts are too soft.
No driving ban ???? Surely 12 month minimum for drug driving conviction?
On a spare wheel too, pretty sure they say 40mph max, what a knob
Yet the police and courts are happy to fine anyone going just about the speed limit with their mobile cameras. Not sure whether I’m disappointed in the police / courts or the government for wanting to keep criminals out of prison. Don’t get me wrong I’m all for keeping within the speed limits but this guy was doing 90 mph on a space saving wheel and was found positive of using cannabis. No mention of loosing his license just a £85 cost. Thank god he didn’t kill anyone.
Another suspended sentence what a surprise what do you actually have to do to be jailed?
Yes, with the snowflake sentences handed down on the island you have to wonder if it isn’t just the council who operate a brown envelope system. Maybe the judges and magistrates are too.
Bargain deal, was he a member of some lodge or something ?
Masons wouldn’t take scum like him.
In other words he got away with it.
He should be banned for life
Absolutely scandalous.
No punishment whatsoever, so he can do it again.
Must be a member of the funny handshake gang, biggest bunch of crooks about.
magistrates on this Island are spineless, simple. He should have been banned for at least 5yrs if not longer makes you wonder what sob story he spun at court
