A Cowes man who smashed into the side of a car in Newport was 4 times the drug drive limit at the time, a court has heard.
Jack Walton, 22, of High Street pleaded guilty to drug driving when he appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court on Tuesday.
Charles Nightingale, prosecuting, told the court that on the afternoon of 16th January, Walton was involved in a road traffic collision at the junction of St James’ Street and Lugley Street in Newport.
Walton had been travelling along the road – which has a 30mph limit – at around 38mph before he collided with a red Peugeot 107 (pictured).
Officers from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary attended the scene and spoke to Walton before arresting him shortly after, believing he was under the influence of drugs.
The 22-year-old was taken to Newport Police Station where a blood sample was taken. It later returned a positive reading for Benzoylecgonine – a breakdown of cocaine. The test gave a reading of 210ug/l – more than 4x the legal limit of 50ug/l.
Defending, Amy Hosell said that since consuming the drug with some old friends Walton hadn’t seen them and feels awful about what happened. She also added that the 22-year-old believed that the drugs were out of his system and that he felt okay to drive.
Walton – a man of previous good character – was given a 12-month driving ban. He was also ordered to pay a £120 fine, £85 costs and a £48 surcharge fee.

Agree, these types should, but that won’t happen. A lot of banned drivers get back behind the wheel illegally, they don’t care because they have no conscious or compassion. They are totally selfish.

I feel so sorry for the innocent victims these low life crash into. He could have killed them. The judges need to give the maximum sentence, a huge fine and takes this cretins licence away for 5 years and make him take a new test before he can legally drive on public roads again.

i can’t believe he he only got 12 month ban !!, so after taking large amounts of cocaine he thought it was okay to put other peoples lives at risk ?, just glad that his selfish attitude didn’t cause a death , i feel sorry for the other car driver who was going about there business only to be hit by this mindless idiot.
should be tough like they are in Guernsey he would get 3 years inside and banned for about 6 years, they have no tolerance to drink/drug driving

There should be no drink/drug limits, it should be zero. If a person thinks its alright to drink or take drugs they will always take a chance. With a zero policy there is no grey area. It should then be an automatic ban if caught. With the system as it is now and magistrates handing out slap on the wrist sentences, I’m afraid things are only going to escalate.
