Police are seeking the driver of a dark coloured hatchback that slammed into the back of another vehicle and then sped away near Yarmouth this morning (Bank Holiday Monday).
It was just before 11:30 that the 2-car collision occurred on Hill Lane, between the towns of Freshwater and Yarmouth.
Island Echo understands that a blue Toyota Yaris was travelling towards Yarmouth when, all of a sudden, another vehicle came up behind at great speed – estimated to be as much as 80mph.
The unidentified car smashed into the back of the Yaris, causing the vehicle to spin out of control. The female driver sustained minor injuries.
Shockingly, the driver of the second vehicle failed to stop at the scene.
It’s thought that the suspect vehicle will have sustained significant damage and may have been abandoned in the local vicinity.
Anyone with information about the driver or the vehicle’s location should call Police on 101, quoting reference 44250229353.
Dashcam footage of the moments leading up to the collision, or in the moments after, is being sought.
It’s about time IW Council installed speed Camera’s and
put in measures to STOP vehicles reaching such speeds.
If speed humps were placed strategically then vehicles
could never reach such ridiculous speeds.
The island does not have a motorway, so no vehicle
should ever drive over the National Speed Limit.
I’m not a human speed-gun, but I’m pretty confident that a car involved in an 80mph impact would’ve been obliterated.
A head-on collision would have amounted to an impact speed of around 130mph, Demon, assuming a speed of around 50mph for the victim car. As the collision came from behind, impact speed would/ could have been reduced to around 30 mph. The impact effect would have been further reduced simply because both vehicles were travelling in the same direction.
We don’t know how fast the victim was travelling – might have been a fairly low relative speed.
It’s about time they started fitting brake pedals to
Island vehicles.

80mph + is the norm that Numpty’s travel at.
I am not joking, only a matter of time before
people start to get killed with all the speeding
that takes place.
IW Council might not know how to tackle speeding,
but when devolution takes place, mainland brains will
tackle the speeding problem.
