UPDATED: A series of red distress flares have been spotted in the skies above Newport tonight (Sunday).
Several Island Echo readers have reported seeing 4 parachute flares near to Shide, thought to have been set off on or near Bluebell Meadows and the new ASDA development.
The sightings were reported at 21:28 and HM Coastguard have been informed.
Cowes RNLI lifeboat has been tasked to launch, but it remains unclear if it is connected with the sighting of the flares although the lifeboat is travelling south down the River Medina towards Newport.
UPDATE @ 22:32 – It has been confirmed that Cowes RNLI have been tasked with searching the upper reaches of the River Medina to Newport following multiple reports of red distress flares seen in the area.
Coastguard Rescue Teams are also said to be involved in the search.
Anyone who has information relating to the source of the flares should contact the Coastguard on 999.
