The Isle of Wight Council has advised that Devils Chimney steps are currently closed for repairs.
Walkers and visitors to the popular landmark are being advised to divert using footpaths V65, V65a, V65d and V66.
It is unclear at this stage how long the steps at the Bonchurch landslip will be closed for.
The Devil’s Chimney is a scenic rock cleft with steps descending into the Bonchurch Landslips between Bonchurch and Luccombe.
UPDATE THURSDAY 12TH AUGUST – The Council’s Rights of Way team have contractors have worked to re-opened the steps at The Devil’s Chimney.
That will never happen then
Quick to send council tax bills and parking fines but slow on any repairs.
I walked through there once upon a time. Given the levels of obesity around nowadays, I think some would get stuck if they tried to walk through that narrow little gap.
Walkers can hardly divert when it is the Devils Chimney they have come to see and right in the peak holiday period. So will it be a week, month, 3 months, 6 months, sometime or never re-opening.
Walked down through there one hour before this article published and it was fine. Not sure why they need to close it? There has been land slippage and crack more towards ventnor though
They are probably pointing the cracks….
