A cyclist in his 60s has tragically died following a collision with a Land Rover on the main road into Shorwell, Police have confirmed.
Emergency services were called to Main Road at 10:15 this morning (Sunday) to reports of a serious collision between a Land Rover Defender and a cyclist at the junction with New Barn Lane, as previously reported by Island Echo.
The Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance and local paramedics were scrambled to the scene but despite the best efforts of medics, which included the use of a defibrillator, the man’s life could not be saved and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Collision investigators from the mainland have spent the afternoon examining the scene to piece together the events that led to the death of the male in his 60s, who was riding a Colnago ACR bicycle.
The impact of the collision left shattered glass in the centre of the carriageway.
Hampshire Constabulary say that the cyclist’s next of kin have been informed and are being supported at this time.
Main Road has now re-opened between Shorwell and Carisbrooke following an 6-hour closure.
A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary has said:
“We are asking anyone who witnessed the collision, or the moments leading up to it to contact police on 101, quoting 44220221925.

This latest incident is the 2nd fatality on the Island’s roads in past fortnight following the death of 64-year-old motorcyclist Graham Nightingale near Shalfleet.

Awful thing to happen to someone, so sorry for the family and friends involved.
Makes me wonder how many near misses happen every day that fate, timing and luck avoid this occurring even more often to cyclists.
Not blaming either but the cyclist is so much more at risk, so all road users need to take an extra second to watch out for the unexpected.
Easy to say I know, but so worth that extra look when, on the rare occasion it prevents such misery for families.

I was cycling that way myself only a short time after and was turned back, If I had been a little bit earlier it could have been me, I’m so sorry for that man, it’s a very fast point right there coming down from the steep hill into the village, and cars parked in that narrow street can cause obstructions you need to ride around, of course I don’t know if that was what caused the accident but it’s a tricky little space to navigate. my deepest condolences to the family.
