A 30-year-old man who carried out what was described in court as a criminal damage ‘rampage’, causing over £2,000 of damage to 12 cars in Sandown, has been ordered to pay thousands of pounds in compensation.
Harry Turnbull, 30, of HMP Winchester but formerly of Westminster Lane in Newport, appeared before Magistrates on Tuesday (31st January) charged with 12 counts of criminal damage – all of which took place in Sandown on 29th August last year.
Turnbull had previously admitted guilt to the crimes back in December.
As previously reported by Island Echo, 12 vehicles parked on and around Beachfield Road in the town were subject to overnight criminal damage, with the owners of the vehicles waking up to find their windscreens smashed and wing mirrors knocked off as a result of Turnbull kicking and stamping on the vehicles.
Police carried out inquiries before charging Turnbull the next day (30th August), originally with 2 counts of criminal damage.
Among the vehicles involved, the most extensive damage was some £618 to a Mazda MX-5. The total value of all the damage caused was a mammoth £2,206.
The court had previously heard that Turnbull has a long list of convictions and was in court in February for an offence of the exact same nature. Last November he smashed up 3 cars with a baseball bat, causing some £2,800 of damage.
Magistrates ordered Turnbull to pay compensation of £2,206.31.

Good luck getting that – unless they deduct it from benefits – which means the taxpayer pays, then he will stick two fingers up.
He should be made to pay for the damage he is donei
The amount ofcompensation he has to pay ,is less than the cost of the damage he caused, something is wrong somewhere!!!!
Will never pay compensation.
And I hope he pays back every single penny. If he doesn’t have a job, deduct it directly from his benefits. Total idiot, total waster.
At last the judges are seeing sense and getting tough on these morons.
How does £2206.31 cover 12 vehicles when one of them alone was £618?
Baby harry hahaha little man
like father, like son – if you have ever met his father – you will see where he gets it from – followed exactly in his footsteps and barely done anything different
Surely one of those car owners could give him a little attention with a baseball bat as he is so fond of them.
Such an act might help him think deeply next time he has an urge to ruin peoples property and cause them fuss and problems.
People who are this aggressive for no reason honestly need putting down, for with such a mindset who knows if next time he will do the same to innocent people.
it wasn’t £2206.31 it ran into thousands, mine was one of them and I paid my insurance excess of £75 + £30 for new wipers but it cost my insurance company in excess of £1200 and as far as I know others just paid the excess as well. He should be made to pay the full amount for the insurance companies as well.
we should really be recreating the debtors prisons- someone like turnbull, would be sent there until he had worked off his debt. He has been told to pay £2206.31- the state should then pay this to the victims and Harry kept in a debtors prison, doing tasks, that generate revenue for the prison, that can be remitted back to the state. If he refuses to work – 23 hours a day locked up, no human contact, three stingy meals a day and left like that until he works the debt off or dies.
12 cars attacked that will require parts, paint, cleaning and compensation for hire vehicles or time lost/inconvenience caused.. and it’s only £2k?
They should of had this estimator in to price for fitting air conditioning in the councils server room
