CONVICTED RAPIST WHO EXPOSED HIMSELF AGAIN GIVEN 4-WEEK CONCURRENT SENTENCE

A convicted rapist, jailed for raping a 76-year-old woman back in 2019, has once again been sentenced for an exposure offence.

Glenroy Barnes, 34, of HMP Isle of Wight, pleaded guilty to exposure under the Sexual Offences Act 2003 when he appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

Barnes, sporting a large dark-coloured afro, appeared before the bench via video link.

Ann Smout, prosecuting, told the court that at around 18:40 a female officer was carrying out a check to see if all inmates were back in their cells. When she came across Barnes, he replied saying “I won’t be long miss”.

He returned to his cell almost immediately, leaving his inspection hatch open, which was described in court as an irregular occurrence.

When the officer went past Barnes’ cell she noticed him laying on his bed with a magazine in 1 hand and his penis in the other. She alerted a male officer who himself was greeted by the disturbing sight.

In a statement read out in court, the female officer, who has been working in the role for 16 years, said it made her feel very uncomfortable.

Defending, Henry Farley said that Barnes had already been internally punished by the prison and had spent 21 days in segregation as well as seeing his prisoner status changed from enhanced to basic.

Throughout the entirety of Mr Farley’s representations on his behalf, Barnes stood on the video link rigorously combing his hair.

This isn’t the first time that Barnes has been before the courts for an exposure offence. He was found guilty of exposing himself to the prison dentist back in March 2021, as previously reported by Island Echo.

Magistrates handed Barnes a 4-week sentence that is to run concurrently with his existing punishment. He was also ordered to pay a surcharge fee of £154.

Barnes is 3 years into his lengthy sentence. His earliest release date isn’t until at least 2036.

OBVIOUSLY SCUM THAT DESERVES HANGING.

BUT…….what do the two prison officers expect working in a nonces prison ?
6 months off sick ? Due to the witnessing of the disturbing image of someone mastabating in there own cell (home). AND the so called serving hatch works from the outside and not the inside.
May i surgest that the lady prison officer gets a real job, such as getting a transfer to HMP WINCHESTER !

I’m sorry, but where does it say 6 months off sick?
Also, do you not think it is rather sexist of you to presume she ought to get a ‘real job’, just because she’s a woman? She’s worked in the job for 16 years – so obviously isn’t phased by much! Regardless of that though, women should not have to be subjected to such behaviour, just because they work in, as you word it ‘a nonces prison’.
Just as men shouldn’t have to be subjected to such behaviour, either.
A rather shallow comment from you!

Sick individual raping someone should be a life sentence?? A 76 year old lady, WTF?? He should be locked away in self isolation for his prison sentence, think then maybe it might fall off?

This man, in my opinion is a danger to the public, in particular, women. You just know that prison will not deter him from committing the same horrible crime again. He should be locked up in Broadmoor indefinitely.

Why Broadmoor? That is a hospital for mentally unwell patients. Jail is for moral deviants who have no respect for societal norms. Clearly has no respect for a judge when being spoken to and clearly wanted to get a kick by knocking one out in full view of female guard. Jail is clearly the right place for him and long may he remain there.

This bloke IS mentally unwell. Unhinged, warped, a sexual deviant whatever you want to label him. Once they let him out he will, without a doubt do it again and because he has been banged up for so long, all that anger and frustration will emerge.
Needs keeping somewhere indefinitely, that’s for sure

Certainly needs locking away from public for a long time as is dangerous.
But he was masterbating in his private cell to a magazine (no different to 90plus% of men/women) where else could he?. Prison officer who has never seen this ,why didn’t they just close flap instead of peering in ?. I guess if he had be castrated as punishment then problem solved and also justice done for his elderly victim.

Without knowing the specifics of this case, it’s not unknown for some offenders to masturbate when they know they’re about to be seen by a (usually) female officer or OSG – or sometimes other professionals like nurses or even voluntary visitors like the IMB. Perhaps read the article again: he previously did this to a prison dentist. Prison staff are people too, really good people, who shouldn’t have to put up with criminal behaviour just because of where they work.

Agreed, Mike.
You also deserve another up-vote for being able to spell ‘masturbate’ correctly!

I get what you are saying, but you wouldn’t work in a hospital if you were entirely unable to stand the sight of blood. You’d think that volunteering yourself as a prison officer would come with a bit of fortitude and expectations of some anti-social tendencies.

If the sight of a man’s member disturbs and mentally harms you to the point that you need 6-months to mentally recover from it, then being in charge of criminals probably isn’t your calling and you are probably more of a liability and risk to be in such a position.

If anyone should actually indeed be prepared to put up with criminal behaviour at work, it’s probably anyone working within the judicial system, including prison staff. They are criminals after all.

Thank you, I get what you’re saying too Mr R’s, but part of being in custody should involve rehabilitation as most prisoners will find their way out again. That can be via education, programmes and pro-social modelling by staff but where necessary, a degree of punishment may be required for poor behaviour, either from the prison or via the courts. Many people do indeed find it’s not the job for them and there’s no shame in that at all. Or they come to the end of the wanting or being able to do it.

I have no idea how many times I saw someone doing this during my service – and all my colleagues will be the same – it’s not the act so much as the intent behind it really.

another pointless sentence, the sentence should be longer and consecutive to the one it is already serving, these concurrent sentences are a joke.
