An Isle of Wight man with an ‘appalling’ driving record, including 3 previous convictions for drink driving, has been banned from being behind the wheel for 40 months after pleading guilty to drink driving yet again.
David John Rolf, 37, of Windmill Close in Ryde but previously of Medeway in Lake, appeared before the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court on Tuesday alongside 32-year-old Mystina Juliet Haynes – both charged with driving a motor vehicle when alcohol level above the limit on 1st May this year.
Moments into the hearing, Rolf pleaded guilty and the case against Miss Haynes was thrown out, with the court hearing she was simply covering for David Rolf. It was laid out that Miss Haynes had a ‘misguided loyalty’ and had lied to Police to protect 37-year-old Rolf, due to his previous convictions.
Ann Smout, prosecuting, explained that at around 23:45 on the evening of Saturday 1st May, a Nissan Micra crashed into a parked vehicle, a fence and bins to the rear of Beachfield Court on The Broadway in Sandown. Police were called to the scene and both Rolf and Haynes stated they were driving, each providing a positive breath test at the roadside. Rolf later blew 52 on the evidential breathalyser.
However, after making their admissions they both denied being the driver in interview, resulting in the pair being hauled before the court this week.
Defending, Henry Farley said that Rolf had a long-standing job as a maintenance man at a hotel but offered very little in way of a defence. He said his client acknowledges he is the author of his own misfortune.
Magistrates handed David John Rolf a 40-month driving disqualification, fined him £253 and ordered him to pay costs of £85 with a £34 surcharge.

Ah the Shaggy defense, nice tactic.
The court should have banned them both+£2000 fine for wasting court time, If I do something wrong I own it!
Being banned three times should result in a lifetime ban. I also don’t understand how the woman involved lied to the police to the point of ending up in court and faces no punishment for that.
We are far too lenient with drunk drivers, four convictions and a slap on the wrist? It’s about time this oxygen thief got a holiday courtesy of HMP.
No time for cretins who drink and then think it’s ok to get into a car and drive. These are irresponsible, immature, idiotic excuses for human beings. These people could potentially kill innocent motorists or pedestrians. Should be locked up in a cell with only bread and water for 5 years. This idiot is a prolific offender. 40 months… he’ll probably drive illegally again. Vile.
You should be banned for life if you get done for drink or drug driving not for a short period of time what a joke. You think people can easily get run over and killed by the morons behind the wheel.
This just says everything that is wrong with our justice system. They’ll send you to prison for non payment of a TV licence or council tax . But get convicted of your fourth drink driving offence and you just get another ban a bit longer than your last one. This muppet should be banned for life after he comes out of a custodial sentence.
