A 21-year-old from Newport who stole 3x bottles of white wine from a shop in Ryde has been ordered to pay compensation. Mazie Bailey, 21, of Atkinson Drive, pleaded guilty to theft from a shop when she appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court on Tuesday 19th December. Liz Miller, prosecuting, told the court that on 28th September, Bailey went into Sainsbury’s on Union Street in Ryde and took 3 bottles of wine before leaving the store whilst making no attempt to pay. Staff acknowledged Bailey as she took the goods, with Bailey telling shopworkers to move out of her way. The bottles in question, 2x Gallo White Zinfandel and 1 bottle of Gallo White Grenace, were worth around £18.50. Bailey was handed a conditional discharge back in September when she was sentenced for causing criminal damage on 11th August. Defending, Jim Osborne said that his client was drunk when she committed the offence. Magistrates ordered that Bailey pay compensation to Sainsbury’s of £18.50 and pay £85 costs.
