49-year-old Gareth Maydew, who was found to be in possession of multiple indecent images of children, including that of a child as young as 1, has avoided jail time.
Maydew, of Garfield Road in Ryde, pleaded guilty to 1 count of possession of an indecent photograph of a child and 2 counts of making an indecent photograph of a child when he appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court in September.
At that hearing, Ann Smout, prosecuting, told the court that in January 2021 2 indecent images were uploaded to the internet. The images were flagged as explicit and after help locating the IP address of the account that uploaded them from his internet provider, it was traced back to Maydew. One of the images was of the most serious nature – involving a child as young as 1-years-old.
Then, in April of that year, Police attended Maydew’s address and arrested him, locating storage of yet more indecent images. In an interview, Maydew admitted the offences.
For Maydew, Oscar Vincent said that his client was in possession of a very low number of images and that following clear admission to Police officers, he showed remorse for his actions. He also added that Maydew was suffering from a mental health disorder at the time.
Due to the nature of the offences, the case was sent to the Crown Court and was due to be heard on 14th November, however that hearing was adjourned.
On Friday, Recorder James Bromige eventually sentenced Maydew to a 3-year community order to include a sexual offender programme and rehabilitation days, with 250 hours of unpaid work attached. He was ordered to pay £100 costs.
Maydew is now on the Sex Offenders’ Register and is subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for a total of 5 years.

So – an individual, puts a distressing image of a small, defenceless baby onto the internet, where it is likely to be forever, which will still be there when that baby becomes an adult, which will impact their entire life, especially as the baby has probably been abused as well and the perpetrator is just given a small slap on the wrist
how can someone be jailed for selling a bit of cannabis, or get far worse for calling someone a name on social media, however, this s cumbag is not banged up permanently.
I also wonder, what about that child’s parent(s)…. were they aware of this ..?? Or are they the type of parents that teach their children to swear when just learning to speak, and parents think that is funny ?? Sick people out there…

the law should state
any magistrate or judge that allows a pervert to walk free, shall be required to have that pervert living next door to them or their young relatives for at least a year.
That sounds like the option for these judges, never a sentence for such a vile crime

I’m getting sick and tired of reading about these sick nonces. I suppose on the plus side, some are getting caught. I bet it’s still just the tip of the iceberg though. Punishments for this should be severe. Life in prison or 5 years and hands chopped off. He’ll find it hard to use the internet with his nose, sod it, chop that off as well.

This is appalling, these low life know how to work the system, the law most definitely needs to change so that these disgusting things pay for these vile activities for the rest of their lives, ban them from using the internet, ban them from using or owning mobile phones and put them in secure van and get them off our beautiful island, human rights my arse they should be stripped of everything including benefits and whatever else is available to make their sad little lives comfortable, Also what qualifies the so called solicitor to use the mental health card, does he have in depth doctors reports about these scum?
