After being stuck at 5 past one for many years, the historic clock at Newport Minster has been repaired and is once again keeping time for the community.
Originally installed in 1858 and refurbished in 2008 the clock has long served as both a practical timekeeper and a feature of the Newport skyline. Over time, wear to its internal mechanisms caused the clock to stop functioning, leaving its hands frozen and its chimes unheard.
Skilled clock specialists from Cumbria Clock company came to the Island in October to remove a number of parts which required repair. The works were completed last week, with the clock reinstalled.
Janet Holliday Churchwarden of Newport Minster, said:
“The clock has always been more than just a way to tell time.
“It’s a symbol of continuity and our community. Having the hands turn again reminds us of our shared history and our commitment to preserving it for future generations. The next project is to look at getting the chimes up and running again. We are ever thankful for the Heritage Lottery Fund for funding this project.”
