With Christmas cheer now in full swing across the Isle of Wight, the latest Census data suggests fewer than half the Island’s population are celebrating the festival as Christians.
According to the Office for National Statistics, 47.7% of people in the Isle of Wight local authority district identify as Christian, closely followed by 43.9% who have no religion.
The Isle of Wight’s proportion of Christians mirrors England and Wales as a whole – the 2021 Census showed 46.2% of the 2 countries identify with the religion.
This is down 13.1% from 59.3% in 2011 but despite the drop, ‘Christian’ was still the most common response.
Island-wise, Newport East and Parkhurst East is the area which saw the greatest decline in Christian identity since 2011 of 17.1%, followed by Ryde West and Havenstreet (15.5%) and Newport Central and Parkhurst West (15%).
The Census shows far East Wight, including Bembridge and Nettlestone, is the most Christian (58.4%), while Newport Central and Parkhurst West is the least (39.2%).
Muslims and Buddhists are the Isle of Wight’s next most populous religious groups, each representing 0.4%. A further 0.2% identify as Hindu and 0.1% are Jewish.

And I’d hazard a guess that 45% of those who ‘identified’ as Christian have never even set foot inside a church aside from attending the occasional wedding or funeral. Curiously though, they also seem to know more about other people’s religions than their own.
That is very true and I bet the numpties vote Deform.
Yawn,wind your neck in.
I thought you were a Reformer
Bless you
Again you are a wanker.
I don’t go to church but I do believe in a creator of all life and if we become godless we will surely live to regret it
Why? Plenty of tribes across the world who’ve never even heard of god, have survived quite nicely. They believe in themselves…they don’t seem to need a boogieman to tell them how to behave, to issue diktats or ‘commandments’. Religion is simply a form of mass control. We also have politics, a similar construct.
This ‘creator’ of all life….is that all Christians, Muslims, Jews, Jains, Hindus, Sikhs etc etc, or was he discriminatory too, and only a deity of one particular cult? Or…which god were you referring to?
Here Here
Amen
Praise be the lord…
Well that’s a load of bollocks.
Strange isn’t it. We confess to be a Christian country with all that’s going on in the news with the rise of Muslims and other religions, and yet they are more devoted to what they believe in then what we are .
That is very true, they respect places of worship.
Our country turns churches into pubs, snooker halls
and homes etc.
Yes because religion is bollocks and has always and always will be the most killing factor..so that’s good then.
