CARE HOME MANAGER WHO STOLE £1,500 FROM VULNERABLE RESIDENT HANDED SUSPENDED SENTENCE

46-year-old Julie Brown, a former care home manager who stole hundreds of pounds from a vulnerable resident’s bank account, has been handed a 32-week prison sentence, suspended for 12 months.

Brown, of Slade Road in Ryde, pleaded guilty to 1 count of theft when she appeared in front of the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court earlier this month, as previously reported by Island Echo.

The former acting manager of Stoneleigh Care Home in Shanklin re-appeared before the same court for sentencing this afternoon (Friday), where Magistrates slapped her with a suspended sentence – despite being told she would go to prison the last time she appeared in court.

Article continues below this advertisement

It comes just 4 years after Brown appeared at the Isle of Wight Crown Court and was found guilty of theft and false accounting. She was handed an 8-month prison sentence, suspended for 18 months, after stealing £3,500 from the National Passenger Transport Sports Association. In 2001, Brown was also convicted of theft after stealing scratchcards from a shop she worked at.

In this latest case, between 12th-22nd May 2022 Brown stole the bank card and pin number of 1 of the residents in her care and took nearly £1,500 in cash withdrawals, namely 6 withdrawals of £250. The card and PIN were locked in a safe that Brown had access to.

The 46-year-old had only been working at the care home for 3 weeks when the offences were committed.

Brown smokes a quick cigarette before her sentencing this afternoon

Brown was caught when the victim – who has severe mental health issues – realised funds were missing after looking at her bank statement on 9th June.

Using CCTV footage from cash points locally, Police were able to confirm Brown had withdrawn the cash, which led to her arrest at home the next day. She admitted that she had been expecting the Police to come to her address.

Article continues below this advertisement

Magistrates today sentenced Julie Brown to 32 weeks in prison, suspended for 12 months, and ordered her to complete 25 rehabilitation days as well as paying £85 costs and a £128 surcharge. The bench ordered Brown to also pay £75 in compensation having previously heard that £1,425 of the £1,500 has been recovered.

One hopes that any kith and kin of the victim feels that justice is done and have no need to trace this vile thing

Clearly ‘care workers’ are not always ‘caring’ and the lowest of the low can find employment IF this thing was at manager level.

Companies who employ such low life dregs need to be sued for millions if the courts can no longer jail our own low life because prisons are too full of imported even worse scum.

Where oh where is the deterrent element to this sentence, for this thief , a repeat offender. Immediate remand in custody , sent to crown court with a recommendation of a custodial sentence. 5 years would be appropriate. Then at least the victims of her offending would have been protected. How many ‘offences’ has she got away with.

Put your money where your mouth is and volunteer to be a magistrate, then you can put them all in prison.
However, I believe if she was a he, the sentence wouldn’t have been suspended.

The system can NO longer jail people because our prisons are filled to bursting with even worse cretins from all corners of the globe now.

NO politicians dare say the reason we have to have feeble sentence now, the race card has become more powerful than the law. Fact.

Claire, one doubts the DBS was obtained by charm, or sleeping with the suppliers of such.

What I find even more disgusting is the sentence.

It is NOT just the amount of money, but the fact that all those ‘it’ robbed, and their families will now be afraid to have ‘another’ care worker in their home for fear of the same thing happening again.

Like any victim of crime, trust is lost, not just money.

And imagine if you have an elderly parent, robbed in their own home by someone ‘pretending’ to care for them. THINK about it, you would feel guilty not seeing the risk, and they would never again feel safe in their own home

Just looking back at her previous trial 4 years ago, she never even had to repay the £3,500 that she stole – no repayment, no compensation to those she stole from. And she was told “If you are tempted to steal, please do not. As the next time you are here it will be a custodial sentence”

What a farce.

So much for security checks when working with the vulnerable, those who employed her should be questioned especially as she had a police record. Or better still the security checks need to be checked to find out how she slipped through the net.

How did this vile creature slip through the net . I would question how she slipped through the net with the DBS check if checks were ever completed .
The sad reality is she cauld set herself up as a private carer on the Island ,what a terrifying thought .
I do believe in Karma so hopefully it’ll come back and bite you hard .

It’s wearing a wedding ring. Assuming that it is hers and not stolen, It’s husband must be so proud.

That care home didn’t protect their residents by allowing a repeat offender to be employed Obviously didn’t address the appropriate forums to ensure the safety of the vulnerable residents They need investigating too as their protocols are lacking Shame on them too

For what she has done, I am not only disgusted at her, but also her employers for not Police checking her for dealing with vulnerable people. The sentence does not fit the crime either but that is not unusual lately with the justice system.

That’s a disgrace. Those people won’t get their money/belonging back and all she gets is a slap on the wrist
There’s far too much of this sort of thing going on

Yet owe one pound sterling in Council Tax and the authorities inform you it is their right to send bailiffs, and send you to prison. This has happened to friends of mine who were given the wrong bill by the council. When it turned out the council actually owed my friends money, they had to wait six months for it without apology. Our country is properly broken.
