A driver’s failure to negotiate a sharp bend on the outskirts of the rural village of Wellow, which resulted in a crash, led to a turn out of emergency services late last night (Friday). Police, fire and ambulance crews were mobilised to the junction of Station Road, Wellow and Main Road, Newbridge at around 22:50. A car is understood to have been travelling from the direction of the Horse & Groom pub towards Newbridge when it collided head-on into an embankment, having failed to take the 90-degree left hand turn. The road was closed for a time as the occupant(s) of the car were tended to by the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service and the vehicle was recovered.
Debris can be seen in the hedgerow where the crash occurred. It is unconfirmed at this time whether the crash is related to a Police pursuit which is said to have begun in the area of Yarmouth a short time before, with officers seen less than 2 miles away from the crash. Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has been contacted for a statement, with a response expected on Tuesday.
