UPDATED: Emergency services were called to the scene of a road traffic collision on The Downs between Ashey and Newport overnight after a vehicle rolled onto its roof.
A modified Peugeot 106 was involved in a collision at around 02:00, resulting in the vehicle rolling and coming to rest upside down on its roof. A show rollcage installed at the rear of the vehicle appears to have supported the structure on impact.
Island Echo understands the occupants fled the scene by the time the first members of the public came across the wreckage, with witnesses describing how the engine was still running and that there was a strong smell of petrol.
Police attended the incident alongside the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service.
UPDATE @ 10:26 – It is understood that the vehicle, owned by a local female, was stolen from Ryde by a known male before being driven away from the town.
UPDATE 25TH APRIL: A 22-year-old man from Wootton has been charged with aggravated vehicle taking, causing damage to a vehicle and driving without insurance. He has also been charged with driving a motor vehicle otherwise than in accordance with his licence.
He will appear at Isle of Wight Magistrates Court on Monday 28th April.
