With the season now in full swing, it’s been a busy week of racing for the Wightlink-Wight Mountain team.
On Tuesday, James Veal rode a great tactical race at Thruxton. After being in a few early breaks which were brought back by the chasing bunch, he got away on the 5th lap with 4 other riders and managed gap the main field. He was in a good position going into the final straight but was just overtaken on the line and took 3rd place and earned valuable points towards his 2nd Cat licence.
Some great teamwork by Matt Allsopp and Kev Chant at the Mountbatten track on Wednesday helped to secure a victory for Joe Staunton in the E/1/2 race with Matt and Kev finishing strong in the bunch sprint to come home in the top 10.
Joe returned to the track on Saturday and rode an almost perfect race but was put out of position on the final bend which hampered his sprint. Despite this, he managed to make up several places in the race to the line and came home to take a well-earned 2nd place.
Jerry Cooper and Charlie Orchard were looking good in the fast-paced 3rd Cat race, but Charlie, unfortunately, suffered a puncture and was unable to continue. Jerry finished strong in the bunch.
To finish off a successful week of racing, Joe and Kev were back in action on Sunday competing in the a3crg P881 10 mile TT near Petersfield. In a strong field, both improved on their PB times; Joe finishing in 6th place in a time of 19.22 with Kev proving his class once again by powering home in an impressive 18.48 taking joint 1st on the day.
