The Isle of Wight Council’s Public Health team has launched a new programme of Strength and Balance Classes designed to help older adults stay active, steady on their feet, and independent for longer.
The classes are delivered by a network of independent and leisure‑centre‑based instructors across the Island, as part of the Live Longer Better Isle of Wight initiative.
Staying active is essential for maintaining independence, preventing falls, and supporting overall wellbeing. These evidence‑based classes are proven to help reduce the risk of falls and are specifically tailored for older adults who may be feeling unsteady, anxious about falling, or experiencing reduced mobility. The programme aims to help Islanders remain stronger for longer and continue doing the things they enjoy.
Benefits of Strength and Balance classes
The classes provide a safe, friendly, and supportive environment where participants can:
- Maintain independence and continue with day‑to‑day activities
- Build confidence and reduce the likelihood of falls
- Improve mobility and general health
- Stay active while enjoying the social benefits of group exercise
What to expect
Each one‑hour session is led by a trained instructor and includes a range of exercises that can be adapted for different abilities—whether seated or standing. Participants also receive simple exercises to practise at home, helping them continue improving between sessions.
Becca Cameron, Councillor for Freshwater South said:
“These classes are a practical way to help older residents stay steady, confident, and independent. I would urge anyone who feels unsteady, or wants to build their confidence, to try the free first session and see the difference it can make. People can stay afterwards for a cup of tea and a chat. That social element is just as important as the physical activity.”
