A 21-year-old uni student from Nettlestone was caught drug driving when Police spotted his motorcycle had a broken rear light.
Thomas Hirst, of Nettlestone Green, appeared before the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court on Friday (7th February) charged with 1 offence of drug driving (cannabis).
Serena Edwards, prosecuting, told the court that it was on 11th July last year, on the main road between Newport and Yarmouth, that officers spotted Hirst’s Honda CBF 125 travelling without a working rear light.
Officers pulled the motorcyclist over and immediately smelt cannabis. A drugs wipe was conducted, which Hirst failed, so he was arrested and taken into custody to provide a blood sample.
The bench heard that the blood test returned a reading of 4.3mg, against a legal limit of 2mg.
Oscar Vincent, defending, said that his client was of previous good character and that this offence ‘will be his last’. He stated that Hirst has since got rid of his motorcycle and is using public transport instead.
Magistrates handed the 21-year-old a 12-month driving ban, fined him £80 and ordered him to pay £85 costs with a £32 surcharge.
