Female fashion chain Dorothy Perkins, situated in Newport High Street, will close its doors for good in March 2015 leaving one of the biggest and prime retail units in Newport empty at a busy intersection on the corner of St James’ Street.
The store is currently situated across the road from the now-empty Phones 4 U store, however Island Echo understands that the Perkins unit could soon be snapped up by JD Sports, who are currently situated next door. It is unclear whether JD Sports would move wholly into the adjoining store, or whether they would expand to over twice the size of the existing premises.
Meanwhile, it has also emerged that the menswear shop Burtons – just a few doors further up the High Street – will also close in March. Burtons is part of the Arcadia group, which Dorothy Perkins also belongs to.
The double closure is being blamed on high rent rates, despite the Dorothy Perkins being over 30% up on sales compared to 2013.
