royalcliffhotelblaze_016READER’S GALLERY: A blaze that destroyed a derelict hotel in Sandown overnight is being treated as suspected arson by Police.

Over 25 firefighters spent the night tackling the large scale blaze at Royal Cliff Hotel, as reported by Island Echo. Now, the incident is being treated as suspected arson as an investigation into the circumstances behind the fire gets underway involving the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service and officers from Hampshire Constabulary.

royalcliffhotelblaze_009The former hotel has been destroyed with nothing but the shell of the building remaining. At its height, the fire could be seen for miles around with plumes of smoke billowing into the night sky.

Four pumping appliances and a water bowser attended the incident shortly after 23:40. At 09:00 the fire was still burning, but under control.

UPDATED @ 17:00 – The aftermath of last night’s blaze that ripped through the Royal Cliff Hotel has become clear this afternoon, with nothing more than a shell of the once grand hotel left standing with debris spread around the property’s grounds.

Firefighters have now left the incident, although the remains of the building continue to smoulder.
