upperapplefordfarmstrawfire3UPDATED: Three pumping appliances and two water carriers from the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service are tackling bales of straw alight in Chale this afternoon (Wednesday).

Two appliances from Newport, one from Shanklin and water carriers from Ventnor and Freshwater are currently attending Upper Appleford Farm off Upper Appleford Lane, where several bales have caught alight.

Crews were called to the incident at 13:39.

upperapplefordfarmstrawfire7UPDATE @ 15:34 – Fire crews remain on the scene and are tackling an area of approx 50x40m. Farm machinery is being used to help distribute the straw.

The Incident Command Unit from Newport is now on scene as the smoke continues to spread across adjoining fields, which can be seen for miles around.

UPDATE @ 16:20 – Firefighters have successfully stopped the fire from spreading to nearby buildings and have moved a number of animals to safety.

upperapplefordfarmstrawfire10The blaze, believed to have been ignited by a bonfire, was starting to spread to bedding in a nearby barn, however crews have worked quickly using breathing apparatus and a main jet to prevent the fire taking hold.

A tractor has been badly damaged by the flames! however the farm owner is continuing to use other machinery to break up the bales.

Water carriers making shuttle journeys into Chale Green to collect water from a main hydrant.

UPDATE @ 18:47 – Crews have withdraw from the incident after 4 hours of firefighting.

The stop message was received shortly before 17:00. One appliance from Newport and the water carrier from Ventnor remain in attendance.
