5 people have been arrested – 2 on suspicion of attempted murder – following a serious assault on a 49-year-old man in Newport during the early hours of this morning (Sunday).
Police were called at 02:07 to a report of a serious assault at an address off Caesars Road.
Officers attended and found a 49-year-old man laying seriously injured and being attended to by paramedics. He was conveyed to St Mary’s Hospital and is currently undergoing surgery for his injuries.
Island Echo is told that there is blood in a communal area inside the block of flats at the centre of the incident. The scene is being guarded by 2 officers ahead of the arrival of forensic investigators.
Hampshire Constabulary has confirmed to Island Echo that 5 arrests have been made in connection with this incident.
A 26-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman, both from Newport, have been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.
A 41-year-old woman and a 44-year-old man, also both from Newport, have been arrested on suspicion of section 18 grievous bodily harm with intent.
A 41-year-old man from Newport has been arrested on suspicion of section 18 grievous bodily harm with intent to resist/prevent arrest.
All 5 remain in Police custody for questioning at this time.
An investigation into the exact circumstances of the incident are ongoing but at this early stage Police believe all parties are known to each other and they are not looking for anyone else in connection with the assault.
Officers have been in the area today conducting further enquiries.
An alleyway that runs between Caesers Road and Westminster Lane was cordoned off for a time but has since been re-opened. Blood can still be seen on the floor, however.
Five against one. I hope they lock them all up.
