3 men have been arrested on suspicion of attempted child abduction after a pair of 6-year-old girls were approached in Newport on Monday evening. It’s been reported to Police that a van – with 3 men inside – stopped on Westminster Lane in the county town at around 18:40 on 29th April. Then, 1 of the men is alleged to have approached the young girls before briefly speaking to them. It has not been disclosed what was said. Thankfully, the 6-year-old youngsters were not physically harmed and were able to run away back to their homes, with the matter being reported to Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary a short time later. Over the past 48 hours officers have been investigating the matter, working to identify the parties believed to have been involved and whether any offences have taken place. A 33-year-old man, a 39-year-old man and a 46-year-old, all from the Isle of Wight, have been arrested on suspicion of attempting to take a child so as to remove them from a person having lawful control. It’s known that 1 of the arrests took place in the Gunville area of Newport this afternoon. The trio remain in custody at Newport Police Station at this time. UPDATE Thursday – Police have confirmed that all 3 people have been released on bail, as enquiries continue. They must return to the Police station to answer bail on 1st August.
