The driver of a Toyota has been arrested on suspicion of drink driving after crashing in the car park of The Hare and Hounds pub at Downend this afternoon (Saturday).
Police were called to the scene at around 16:30 when the MR2 smashed into a post and come to rest down an embankment at the exit of the pub car park.
Island Echo understands the male driver was pratting around in the gravel car park – doing doughnuts and wheel spins – just moments before the crash.
He is not thought to have consumed any alcohol at The Hare and Hounds.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary sent numerous resources to the scene, arresting the driver and taking him into custody.
No injuries were sustained to the driver, his female passenger or anyone else in the car park.
It has been confirmed that a 58-year-old man – thought to come from the Bembridge area – has been arrested on suspicion of drink driving and possession of Class B drugs.
The crashed vehicle remains in-situ with a ‘Police aware’ sticker in place.
UPDATE SUNDAY – 58-year-old Trevor Pearce has been charged with drunk driving and possession of a Class B drug – namely cannabis.
Pearce, of no fixed abode – but thought to frequent the Bembridge area – has been bailed to appear at Isle of Wight Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday 14th March.
He collected his vehicle from The Hare and Hounds pub earlier today.
Yet another car crash by yet another drunk driver. This is an almost daily occurrence on the island. If not alcohol then drugs. They don’t care. Why would they? The penalties are pathetic and so what if they’re disqualified, they drive anyway with no licence or insurance. Three years in the army would sort these losers out!

Such a shame the pair of them aren’t busted up, in real pain, they might have learnt, now it will just be ‘a laff’ with chav scum mates when drunk or drugged up on our tax credit money and subsidised rent and c.tax they save to ‘enjoy life’ with.

What a twatty comment. Police don’t have a crystal ball. The response is based on the call from the public, which could include that persons are trapped or the vehicle is making off. Its not until emergency services arrive at the scene that the scale of the incident becomes clear.
Just how much longer do we have to put up with this sort of behaviour? At 4.30 on a Saturday afternoon at a family pub a Prat carries on like this. People have to put up with this sort of scum every day of the week, had he not crashed there, he would have been putting innocent lives in peril on the roads.
No this is not just an Island issue, this is happening across the Country, we just happen to live on an Island that is polluted with utter filth. Courts will hand out punitive sentences/fines. The public lose their lives. This is a UK issue from a government powerless to prevent and deter, when it happens on the Island the Echo simply report on it. Drunk/Drug drivers, Violence and knife crime all happening here and across the UK.

I drove past and saw the tosser sitting on the pub bench afterwards. Total scratter, and looked wasted. A lot of unmarked rozzers on blues and twos were attending at speed. I feel a marginal but palpable increase in police presence on the roads but they do face an uphill struggle with the number of morons that infest the roads.

Take their licence and revoke it for life put them in prison for ten years and not some holiday camp detention centre a maximum security prison and a £100,000 fine, and how has this scumbag even got a licence if it’s of no fixed abode you have to have an address to have a driver’s licence that’s another thing they should do when you apply for a licence run checks to make sure that the address given is your address not a care of address or your licence application is refused .
