Southern Water is tackling a new sewer leak discovered in Appley Park in Ryde, continuing a series of problems with the main pipe that carries all wastewater from Ryde and Seaview to Sandown.
The leak was identified last Thursday (24th July) and work has been ongoing since to minimise the environmental impact.
Contractors have fenced off the affected section of woodland and a tanker is in place to remove some of the sewage while repairs are carried out.
The latest incident follows a string of issues along the same critical sewer main. In late 2024, the pipe suffered a significant burst on Appley Road, leading to widespread disruption and a prolonged repair effort. There was also a failure on West Lane in Brading, which closed the road for over a month as Southern Water addressed the problem.
This is not the first time Appley has been affected. In 2021, a major collapse of the main sewer prompted a multi-million-pound repair programme.
Southern Water has confirmed that the current leak is contained and that further updates will be issued as repair work progresses. No work was taking place on site yesterday lunchtime (Monday).
