60 STRIKES CAUSE POWER DISRUPTION

thunderlighteningUPDATE: Over 60 lightening strikes have this morning caused power disruption across the Island with some homes loosing power completely for a short period.

After a summer sunshine week, Islanders were awoken to the sound of thunder clapping in the skies at around 04:30 this morning before a lightening bolt struck the main electricity network, causing a safety shutdown to prevent any damage. Homes in the Brading, Sandown and Bembridge areas experienced a short 30-60 second power cut at around 05:30.

A spokesperson for Southern and Scottish Energy (SSE) confirmed to Island Echo that no customers on the Isle of Wight are without power this morning, however disruption is likely as the thunderstorm continues.
