A man who walked out of Morrison’s with a bag of stolen goods yesterday (Monday) before being intercepted by a security guard who clawed back the items has been sent to prison for 6 weeks. Daniel Drake, 40, of Holyrood Street in Newport, appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court this afternoon (Tuesday) charged with 2x theft from a shop and common assault – all committed on New Year’s Day. At the hearing, Drake admitted stealing £316 worth of goods – mainly alcohol and meat – from Morrison’s as well as goods of a similar nature from Sainsbury’s a short while later. An Island Echo reader captured the moment that a security guard working at the South Street supermarket attempted to take back the stolen goods from Drake on Town Lane in Newport – watch the altercation below VIDEO: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FviFV32J3_4 All the items stolen were recovered, except for one bottle that Drake was holding. Drake admitted to Police when questioned that he had not long been released from a mainland prison on licence. Magistrates handed the 40-year-old a 6-week prison sentence and ordered he pay a £154 victim surcharge fee.
