ECS RESTORE ISLE OF WIGHT PRIDE WITH HAMPSHIRE VASE WIN OVER WEY VALLEY
East Cowes Sports produced a determined performance in atrocious conditions to beat Wey Valley 3-1 in the Hampshire Vase at Beatrice Avenue on Saturday (1st November).
The victory held extra significance for the Isle of Wight side, as last season Wey Valley – who ply their trade in the Aldershot & District League – had defeated Cowes Sports Reserves in the Hampshire Trophy at the Zilch Waste Stadium. East Cowes Sports were keen to restore Isle of Wight pride – and did so in style.
The home side made the ideal start when they were awarded a penalty in the 7th minute for handball, which Blake Reeves calmly converted (1-0). Soon after, Tom McDowell was forced off with a suspected fractured wrist, but the home side held firm despite a torrential downpour.

After the break, conditions worsened again as hail swept across the pitch. Wey Valley fought back to equalise in the 65th minute (1-1), but East Cowes Sports responded immediately – Reeves grabbing his second of the match when a long clearance bounced awkwardly over the visiting keeper (2-1). Substitute Callum Fryer made sure of the win five minutes from time, breating the offside trap to tap home and complete a memorable 3-1 victory.

“The conditions made for a very scrappy game. However, despite the conditions, there were few poor challenges and both sides finished the game on friendly terms. Wey Valley made it awkward for us.”

In other Hampshire Vase games…
Sandown & Lake were the other Isle of Wight side to defeat North Island opposition with a 0-2 victory at Bishopstoke courtesy of strikes from Chris Blow and Alex Breingan.
Newchurch, Oakfield Reserves, Ryde Saints Reserves and W&B Reserves were all knocked out of the Hampshire Vase by mainland opposition. Pan Community had their game against Bournemouth Electric abandoned.
In the all Island ties, Newport IW Reserves trounced Osborne Coburg Reserves at Seaclose thanks to a double hat trick from Jack Butler, a further hat trick from Ryleigh Wain, a brace from Robbie Shepherd and a further goal from Caleb Charlesworth.
A Reece Galloway hat trick, a brace by Jordan Flynn and a further goal from Liam Blythe saw West Wight Reserves overcome Bembridge & Vectis Reserves at Camp Road.
West Wight A defeated Sandown & Lake on penalties after drawing 2-2 over 90 minutes. Dan Busbridge and Phil Shiro were on target for Sandown with Joe Melody and Simon Merrett grabbing the goals for the visitors.
Ryde Saints beat Ventnor Reserves by the best of 9 goals at Smallbrook.
In the Hampshire Trophy…
Sadly, only Whitecroft & Barton Sports were the only Isle of Wight side to make it through to the 3rd round of the PTS Compliance Saturday Trophy by beating AFC Stoneham Reserves by the best of 7 goals at Sandy Lane, thanks to braces from Harry Green and Aidan Sainsbury.
West Wight were desperately unlucky to lose on penalties to Headley United after drawing 1-1 over 90 minutes with Gareth Bricknell on target for the Island side.
Bembridge & Vectis were beaten by the best of 5 goals at former Wessex League side Fleet Spurs despite strikes from Jamie Barratt and Harry Symes.
Osborne Coburg lost 4-1 to a further former Wessex League side – Andover Town – with Elliott Apter on target for the visitors.
Ventnor were defeated 6-2 at Folland Sports A with Mark Taylor bagging a brace for the Island side.
Fordingbridge Turks were awarded an away walkover against High Park.
In the Harwoods-Renault Isle of Wight League…
Northwood St Johns rose to 8th place in Division 1 by beating 7th-placed Shanklin by the best of 5 goals at the Isle of Wight Community Club courtesy of a Barney Snaith brace and a further strike from Harry Bell. Rory Day and Dan Drudge were the Shanklin scorers.
4th-placed Cowes Sports Reserves overcame 10th-placed Oakfield at Slade Road thanks to goals from Joe Calder and Luke Smallwood.
In Division 2, 2nd-placed Binstead & COB maintained their 100% record by beating East Cowes Vics Reserves at the Molehill. The Binstead scorers were Ad McKenner, Zak Sullivan, Ash Smith and Olly Crook.
Niton have gained their first 3 points of the season to date by seeing off bottom club Seaview courtesy of a Tom Brownrigg hat trick and further goals from sam Hatton and Jordan Fowkes.
