Ryde Tandoori – the Isle of Wight’s longest-established Indian restaurant – is celebrating after being awarded a 5-star food hygiene rating, cementing its reputation for excellence in both cuisine and cleanliness.
The much-loved restaurant on Union Street in Ryde has proudly served generations of islanders and visitors alike, with a rich heritage that spans over 60 years.
Originally established in 1962 by the Ali family, the business began as “The Taj Mahal” just around the corner in Cross Street. In 1992, the family moved to their current premises in the heart of the town, renaming the restaurant “Ryde Tandoori” and continuing their tradition of authentic Indian cuisine.
Now managed by Shimon, a third-generation member of the founding family, Ryde Tandoori has remained a cornerstone of the community, offering classic dishes crafted with care and tradition. Their head chef Mr Miah brings more than five decades of culinary expertise, having cooked traditional Indian cuisine for over 55 years.
The menu features a wide variety of dishes, from rich and aromatic curries to freshly prepared tandoori grills, biryanis, vegetarian specialities and house favourites. Guests can enjoy familiar classics such as Chicken Tikka Masala and Lamb Rogan Josh, alongside chef’s specials and regional delicacies made with authentic spices and ingredients.
The restaurant’s popular banquet nights offer fantastic value and continue to draw a loyal crowd every week. Held on Wednesday and Sunday evenings, diners can enjoy a full Indian dining experience including a starter, main course, side dish and dessert for just £19.95 per person. The restaurant is also now taken bookings for Christmas Day.
