A man who carried out what was described in court as a criminal damage ‘rampage’, causing over £2,000 of damage to 12 cars in Sandown, has pleaded guilty.
Harry Turnbull, 30, and currently of HMP Winchester, appeared before Magistrates on Tuesday charged with 12 counts of criminal damage – all of which took place in Sandown on 29th August this year.
As previously reported by Island Echo, 12 vehicles parked on and around Beachfield Road in the town were subject to overnight criminal damage, with the owners of the vehicles waking up to find their windscreens smashed and wing mirrors knocked off as a result of Turnbull kicking and stamping on the vehicles.
Police carried out enquiries before charging Turnbull the next day (30th August), originally with 2 counts of criminal damage.
Among the vehicles involved, the most extensive damage was some £618 to a Mazda MX-5. The total value of all the damage caused was a mammoth £2,206.
The court heard on Tuesday that Turnbull has a long list of convictions and was in court in February for an offence of the exact same nature. Last November he smashed up 3 cars with a baseball bat, causing some £2,800 of damage.
Magistrates have adjourned the case until 15th December due to Turnbull appearing at Portsmouth Crown Court for other matters – namely an actual bodily harm charge – this coming Friday. However, it is hoped he will be dealt with by the Crown Court for all matters at the end of the week.

He likes smashing things up so what about bringing back hard labour…he can smash as many rocks as he wants. Or put him to work in a scrapyard breaking cars with a sledge hammer.
Or get him to finish smashing and demolition the empty hotels.
Win win.
No other f**ker is doing nothing !
Hang him I say
Should be made to work in prison and pay for damages, laws are stupid in this land as no appropriate compensation to victims. If only had third party insurance get nothing, others then will go up at renewal etc, just not fair.
Absolutely, if you cause £2300 of damage then you pay back £2300, sure this figure is very conservative though what with costs, lost working days etc
Very well said Freddie. We have to pay for this scum to continue breathing.
Oh, and yes, insurance premiums too!!
There was a lot of inconvenience I and other car owners had no car for over 2 weeks waiting for a screen to be fitted
Shouldn’t be free to roam the streets, what will he do next!!
If you have ever met his natural father, you would be see that he is just a chip off the old block. Harry is just next generation deadbeat that has followed in his fathers footsteps, round and round the revolving prison gates and it seems that he is committing just the same crimes as well.
Shame the Sandown arsonist never visited their home.
He’s going to get a beating for this, probably several.
Harry Turnbull needs to be kept behind bars for a VERY long time. Total low life. A menace to society. One of life’s wasters. The Crown court needs to sentence him, not a Magistrates Court.
I think this and other stories and your comments highlight how important the issue of anti-social and lower-level criminal activity and our response is becoming. The more crowded the Island ( and country) becomes and the more the social fabric is breaking down, the more we must take a stand against anti-social behaviour at all levels. No good making excuses about bad upbringing and how it’s the Tories or all of us as a society who are at fault. We just have to say that bad and criminal behaviour from littering and graffiti to bad and dangerous driving is wrong and must be punished. We’ve tried endless agonising and the blame game. Let’s just agree we need to get tough. Just saying.
