A Ryde man who was found at the wheel of a vehicle that had crashed into a Police car just minutes earlier has seen his driving licence endorsed with 8 points, despite saying he wasn’t the driver who caused the damage. Sean Donovan, 27, of Green Street in Ryde pleaded guilty to possession of cannabis, driving without a licence and driving without insurance. Lauren Stone, prosecuting, told the court that an on-duty Police officer walking towards their patrol car on Warwick Street in Ryde. They then heard a thud and noticed some cosmetic damage on the vehicle once they had walked back to it. The incident was reported before officers located the vehicle nearby on Melville Street. The man behind the wheel of the Seat Altea – Donovan – was arrested. Checks on the vehicle revealed he was not the registered keeper, had no affiliation with the owner and was driving without no insurance and no licence. A small amount of herbal cannabis was found in his possession. Donovan is no stranger to the court system and has a total of 20 convictions for a total of 60 offences. He was previously given a driving ban back in 2020. Defending, Oscar Vincent said that Donovan wasn’t the one driving the car when it hit the Police vehicle and that he was just moving the car from the middle of the road after the driver and owner had dumped it and done a runner. Magistrates handed Donovan an £120 fine and ordered him to pay costs of £85 and a £48 surcharge fee.
