A 29-year-old heavy goods driver crashed his personal car in the village of St Helens after consuming 4 pints of alcohol, a court has heard.
Matthew Rowbotham, of Buttercup Glade, appeared before the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court on Friday (7th February) charged with drink driving – a charge he pleaded guilty to at the first opportunity.
Serena Edwards, prosecuting, explained to the court that it was on 4th January this year that emergency services were called to Upper Green Road following reports of a road traffic collision.
Police arrived on scene to find Rowbotham’s VW Golf had smashed into 2 parked vehicles near to the junction with Guildford Road. The 29-year-old made swift admissions that he had consumed 4 pints of Moretti before driving him and his girlfriend, who was in the front passenger seat at the time of the collision.
Defending, Oscar Vincent told the bench that his client was of previous good character with a clean licence – and that he was a professional driver and mechanic holding both Class 1 and Class 2 HGV licence.
Mr Vincent said that Rowbotham had ‘learnt his lesson’.
Magistrates handed Matthew Rowbotham an 18-month driving ban and fined him ÂŁ553, as well as ordering him to pay ÂŁ85 costs and a ÂŁ221 surcharge.
Hardly what I would call a professional driver,
an uneducated Numpty comes to mind.
Hopefully his employer have dismissed him.
Drink driving kills innocent people, should be banged
up!
Ain’t there any Vacancies at HMP Isle of Wight
Seems to be a Caulkhead thing drink driving!
just like speeding in vehicles, it’s not this bad up
North!
Depending on who you ask, to qualify as a caulkhead you have to be born on the Island or born of parent both of whom we’re born on the Island. So where’s your evidence that drink driving and speeding on the Island is predominantly by this tiny percentage? And where’s your evidence it’s worse here than ‘up north’? If you must spend your time making puerile comments on this site, why not try to base them on reality and facts?
He says that he has learned his lesson? Why has it taken him this and to put his girlfriend at risk of injury or death and a driving ban of 18 months and a fine of ÂŁ553, ÂŁ85 in costs and a surcharge of ÂŁ221 to learn his lesson. As a professional driver myself, you know damn well that you DO NOT drink and drive or take drugs. I ask anyone replying to this, what is going to stop these idiots? I was just wondering if there is a bus route to the local job centre?
