A Sandown man who has been smoking cannabis for the past 12 years has been banned from the roads after Police caught him drug driving in his van.
35-year-old Martin Wheeler, of Avenue Road, pleaded guilty to drug driving (cannabis) when he appeared before Magistrates last Friday (20th May).
The court heard from prosecutor Liz Miller that Police stopped Wheeler on Fairlee Road, Newport on 5th February this year after suspecting him of speeding in his VW Transporter.
Officers noted a smell of cannabis and Wheeler admitted to being a user. A roadside drugs wipe was then carried out and returned a positive result.
Defending, Michael McGoldrick told the court that his client – a local maintenance man – accepts he has to make lifestyle changes and cut down on his cannabis usage. Mr McGoldrick made clear the was no evidence of bad driving from Wheeler.
Magistrates banned Martin Wheeler from driving for 12 months, fined him £333 and ordered him to pay £85 costs with a £34 surcharge.

Should crush the vehicle, then and only then will they learn.
When will people learn. Though you can’t teach stupid.
Defending solicitor made it clear there was no evidence of bad driving. Hold on, doesn’t it state that he was stopped on suspicion of speeding, that in itself is a sign of dangerous driving.
Some of these excuses that are coming out lately for the defence are really laughable.
Do you even drive? Bet he wasnt even speeding, just what the plastic IOW police say to start their power trip, stick their hands on you, abuse their authority and score brownie points for a drug wipe that means basically nothing.
When you smoke cannabis you are
highfor only around two hours but stays in your system for 30days, could of had a banger last week and these clueless idiots will nail you for it. Stop nodding along like sheep and giving these to##ers the last of your freedoms ffs if he`d of got out of the car blind drunk you would be in the same situation.I want to see mandatory random drug wipes for the police and the results and names posted, only the military get mandatory random tests not the police. Should be the other way around. Watch these clueless plastic iow police melt
Wake up people, keep let this happen and you wont have anything left.
