A beachside café in Shanklin has been hit with a lowly 1-star food hygiene rating after inspectors uncovered expired food, poor cleanliness, and a lack of temperature checks.
Salix Cafe, located on Small Hope Beach, has fallen from a 5-rating (very good) to a 1-rating (major improvement necessary).
An Environmental Health Inspector from the Isle of Wight Council visited the seaside premises on 4th September and found issues with stock rotation, monitoring of fridge temperatures and general cleanliness.
When carrying out fridge checks, the inspector found the following foods to be past their ‘use by’ date.
- Prawns “Use by” 28th August 2025
- Egg mayonnaise not labelled and past manufacturers “Use by” 1st September 2025
- Cooked Chicken “Use by” 1st September 2025
- Pasty “Use by” 1st September 2025
- Tuna Mayonnaise “Use by” 3rd September 2025
- Pasty “Use by” 3rd September 2025
Issues were also found with the monitoring of fridge temperatures, with it discovered that no records were completed since 17th August 2025. It is recommended that such checks are made twice a day. Foods such as bacon were being left to cool for at least 3 hours after they had been cooked, increasing the likelihood of any bacteria growing.
The inspector also noted that items within the freezer weren’t covered and that the temperature probe, used for monitoring items of food, was not being sanitised between uses.
Cleanliness issues with the taps in the hand wash basin were also discovered as was the need to repair cracked tiles in the kitchen area.

The Salix – Beach Café has been approached for comment, but at the time of publication no response has been received.

Won’t be eating there in the foreseeable
So many businesses are taking the p*ss.
They are charging good money for rubbish and
poor service.
Time to close such filthy establishments down.
Give that one a miss.
Disgusting, close it
The lovely owners pour their heart and soul into this place.
I understand that people are going to feel let down by this slip in rating, especially from somewhere which is usually a 5* establishment, but please remember there are humans on the other end of your outrage who have suffered a terrible year within their personal lives. It’s not an excuse, but it is a genuine reason.
I wholeheartedly trust them when they say they are taking steps to make this right again, and certainly won’t be boycotting them.
There are NO excuses for FILTH!
Whether persons have suffered terrible problems
etc it is no excuse to risk other persons getting
food poisoning or worse.
Any establishment not achieving at least a 3 star ☆☆☆
Rating needs closing down.
I only eat at locations with a minimum 4 star ☆☆☆☆ rating.
