A Ryde man who was found to be driving with cannabis in his system has seen his licence taken away from him just 12 months after he passed his test.
Brennan Smallcombe, 22, of High Park Road in Ryde, pleaded guilty to drug driving (cannabis) when he appeared before Magistrates at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court on Friday (27th January).
Liz Miller, prosecuting, told the court that on 17th September 2022, Smallcombe – in his Suzuki Ignis – was stopped on Hunnuyhill in Newport.
A roadside drugs wipe was conducted which returned a positive result for cannabis. Smallcombe was arrested and taken to Newport Police Station leaving his passenger stranded.
A blood test was conducted at the station with the 22-year-old returning a reading of 2.5 – the legal limit is 2.
Henry Farley, defending, said that there was nothing in the Police statement that suggested Smallcombe – who passed his driving test in January 2022 – was driving badly and that the bricklayer had admitted that losing his licence was going to make things extremely difficult.
Addressing the court, Smallcombe himself said:
“I’m really sorry or what I’ve done. It’s not safe for anyone”.
Magistrates handed the 22-year-old a 12-month driving ban. He was ordered to pay a fine of £250, costs of £85 and a surcharge fee of £100.

“I’m really sorry or what I’ve done. It’s not safe for anyone”.so why do it.
He’s wrong; studies conducted in states that have legalized (should be decriminalised) cannabis have shown that people driving under the influence of cannabis drive noticeably safer than drivers who aren’t and thats a fact.
That’s a fact is it? Maybe F1 drivers should get stoned & then they wouldn’t crash & lose races
He sounds like a decent chap,
I hope that his stranded passenger got home safe and well.
Nice one !! Dislike it when the defence people state, ‘ Oh he/she needs his/her licence or he/she will lose their job ( or other excuse ) ‘ How pathetic… The guilty person should have thought about that before driving !!!
Why did’nt you carry on that silly little he/she thing aha, dont you mean that guilty he/she. I thought you were trying to create a new gender by confusing the comment bot to spout out code for sheheshehe… incredible !!!
2.5 reading, and you think a year long ban will reduce it to less as he has stopped using? He probably will nearer the end of the year just to get his licence back and try to aim for 2 reading.
