A woman who caused severe disruption to services on the Island Line following a trespassing incident in Ryde back in February has been ordered to pay £400 compensation. Jade Sandells, 26, of Esplanade in Ryde admitted trespassing and intentionally causing a public nuisance at a previous hearing, but appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court for sentencing last Friday (5th April). The court heard how, on Thursday 1st February, train services between Ryde Pier Head and Shanklin were suspended at around 16:15 when a trespasser was seen on the line. Power to the track was switched off and Police were called to the scene. At the time Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary said it was responding to a concern for welfare incident at Ryde Esplanade. Sandells managed to evade those trying to detain her for some 2 hours and was eventually apprehended on Winton Street. Magistrates handed the 26-year-old an 18-month community order with 25 rehabilitation days and 80-hours of unpaid work attached. She was also ordered to pay compensation of £400 to Island Line.

Lets be honest here, Island line probably wanted to cancel trains anyway.
And so concerned with her welfare were they, they decided to criminalise her and impose a hefty fine instead. Nice.
So, you’re implying it shouldn’t be a criminal offence to trespass onto the railway lines?
Just have a free-for-all, and let anyone and everyone wander across the lines.
PLEASE, Echo, think about adding a BLOCK facility so we can permanently get rid of the idiots. Thanks.
I’m implying she’s possibly got a mental health disorder, but as we have little provision left she gets little help trying to manage her condition herself. It was a welfare check they were first called out for, not a criminal activity. I’ve known of plenty who, when chased, end up anywhere with no thought for safety, either theirs or others. Not ideal no, but criminalising the ill? Really?
That woman is an absolute nuisance and attention seeker. The police are routinely at her address and countless times ambulance crews are seen wasting their time with her. (I know, I live near her)
She should be made to pay up front every time she calls an ambulance.
All it is with her, is me, me, me
Why only £400 compensation? and why to Island Line?. Probably dozens of people missed connexions and possibly flights ! Should be £1000s of pounds.
Fair comment, but please, CONNEXIONS, that is an Americanism, Connections, please, we are BRITISH!!
I hope shes back on the rihht track now
Must have gone off the Rails in the first place.
She’s not the ticket
She might be an absolute nightmare. She might have been running from an attacker. She might be mentally ill. I suspect the only person who genuinely knows is her. Either way, stop with the negative judgement, it’s no more cool than if you ridiculed granny for having dementia and legging it down the street in her nightie.
It is so sad Dear Karen that most Echo readers have no notion at all regarding Compassion
There’s compassion and there’s someone who keeps doing things to gain attention but it’s affecting others lives as well. If she’s known to the authorities why aren’t they doing anything to help her long term? I’ve heard of her name I think she’s a bit of a nuisance. This island has no hope it’s just a shambles in so many ways nowadays
Because the resources for help are simply not there, long term care is not there. It used to be, but budget cuts mean that anyone struggling to manage their MH is not crisis-managed until a crisis has already happened. The stupidity is that if the help WAS given when needed and managed until episode is completely over it would cost far less in the long run, both financially and societally.
Blimey she got a worse punishment than a druggy driver what is going on?
Turn the cunt into mush next time
