Wightlink has picked up the baton after Medina Marching Band asked for help to attend the annual Lord Mayor’s Show.
The band was thrilled to be invited to perform at November’s annual show alongside some of the biggest names in military music including bands from HM Royal Marines, The Royal Air Force, The Guards Division and The Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment Band.
But while honoured at receiving the invite, the band, which is run on a voluntary basis, asked for assistance in meeting travel and accommodation costs. They were delighted when Wightlink Ferries stepped in to offer free transport for the band’s 2 coaches, supporting Luton van and around 90 musicians and supporters.
Kevin Downer Medina Marching Band vice chairman says:
“This is a fantastic help towards our goal of getting to perform at one of the best-known events in London, as well as one of the longest-established dating back to the 16th century.
“Without the support of companies such as Wightlink we would certainly stretch ourselves thin to be able to take part in these fantastic events around the country. The travel offer is a fantastic help. We are extremely grateful to Wightlink and we are getting increasingly excited about the performance.”
Wightlink chief executive Keith Greenfield says:
“As soon as we heard that the band was appealing for help in performing at the Lord Mayor’s Show then we were delighted to do our bit.

We know the musicians will do themselves and the Isle of Wight proud at this famous event.”

“Over the next five months we’ll be actively fundraising to raise £2,500 and would love to hear from any local companies or individuals that could help meet the rest of our expenses.
“The band is totally self-funded so while we are all excited about attending the show, this is a big additional cost for the year.”
