An Island swimming enthusiast is still making waves at the local pool – at the age of 90.
Ann Gardiner’s passion for swimming sees her in the water weekly at 1Leisure Medina, Newport, where she has been a member for more than 25 years.
To mark her 90th birthday and the fact she has clocked up quarter of a century’s membership, 1Leisure have presented super-fit Ann with a year’s free One Card membership.

“Our doors are open to everyone – no matter age or ability. Ann has proved her age is no barrier to fitness and has impressed us all with her attitude and determination to stay forever young and fit through exercise.
“It was our honour and pleasure to give her a year’s free membership in recognition of her dedication to staying healthy – she could teach us all a thing or two about the importance of keeping fit.”
Ann, from East Cowes, said:
“I am absolutely delighted with my free membership. I really enjoy swimming, it is brilliant and has kept me going all these years and I think everyone should go for it. The Medina pool is clean, tidy and very bright and I love being in water, whether it is a pool or the sea.
Article continues below this advertisement “I have been coming to Medina to swim since my granddaughter was a baby (she is now 23) and I even taught her to swim. Three generations of me family have swum at Medina, beginning with me, since 1986.”
The year-long free membership, worth £360, means she can take advantage of a range of activities such as swimming, water workouts and the use of the health suite.
