49-year-old Paul Brookes, a former bus driver who was at the wheel of a double decker when it crashed into a field in Arreton back in 2021, will stand trial later this year accused of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. Over the past 2 years, Police have been investigating the major incident in which a Southern Vectis bus left the carriageway and hit a bank, resulting in 3 people on the top deck being thrown into the air. Those 3 passengers suffered serious injuries, with a further 10 people receiving minor injuries. Brookes, of New Road in Brading, appeared before Magistrates in February this year and denied 3 charges of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. The case was sent up to the Isle of Wight Crown Court where the matter was then adjourned to Portsmouth Crown Court to be heard in front of Recorder Daniel Sawyer today (Monday). At this morning’s hearing, Paul Brookes pleaded not guilty to all 3 counts. The case has been adjourned for the trial, which will begin at the Isle of Wight Crown Court on 23rd September. The trial is expected to last no more than 4 days.
